Sodding

Every house deserves a beautiful green lawn. Not only will having one increase the visual appeal and quality of life at home, but it will also increase property value over time. In order to ensure that you’re receiving a high-quality lawn capable of surviving years of use, you’ll want to depend on quality service and supplies.

What is Sodding?

Sodding is the process of installing the sod – otherwise known as ready-made grass – onto your lawn to create a lush, green landscape. Sod is the grass that has already been planted, grown, and cut, the grass and soil being held together by roots and other materials to allow for transfer from location to location. The application of sod to your existing space will allow for the roots and materials to combine and fuse to the ground beneath it, creating a permanent, natural lawn replacement.

Sodding VS Seeding

Sodding is the process of installing prepared pieces of quality sod (grass) onto your lawn. Seeding is the process of penetrating your current soil, placing grass seeds underneath the surface, and then nursing the area with water and sunlight to allow for new grass to grow. There are a few key differences when it comes to sodding vs seeding.

Although sod laying is more expensive than seeding, the process is significantly faster and will allow for far better results. Seeding can often lead to uneven lawn growth, bald patches, or dead grass, as the growth process requires lots of care and attention. Sodding, on the other hand, only requires that you call a professional installer to prep the area and have the rolled grass applied. Once complete, you’ll be able to enjoy your perfect lawn in no time at all.

Benefits of Replacing the Lawn

Sod is loved by homeowners across Canada due to its quality and rigidity, and the list of benefits that come from replacing your lawn with sod is long. Here are a few of the key benefits that accompany sod installation:

  • Heat Reduction. Fresh sod helps to reduce the ground heat generated during the summer months. The ability of sod to dissipate heat allows it to act as a natural air conditioner – reducing greenhouse gas emissions, absorbing carbon dioxide, and creating a more comfortable living environment for your family.
  • Efficiency. Sod is by far the most efficient and effective way to obtain a healthy green lawn. Fresh rolls of sod can be delivered and installed in just a few hours, and assuming proper care, will be ready for enjoyment within just 2-3 weeks.
  • Sustainability. Sod requires less water to maintain health at installation, meaning that it’s more environmentally sustainable than seeding.
  • Quality. A fresh sod application will help prevent erosion and stabilize soil on uneven terrain, allowing for years of quality.
  • Value. Bright, green, well-maintained grass has been shown to substantially increase property values. A worthwhile investment for any homeowner.

FAQ

When it comes time to lay new sod on your lawn, you’re going to want to follow the steps necessary to ensure that it’s installed correctly, allowing it to fuse to the soil beneath it and grow successfully. These installation steps include the following:

  • Prep area and lay sod – Before installing sod, you’re going to need to prepare the area to ensure it’s ready for fusion. This prep work will primarily involve raking and watering.
  • Position and unroll the sod – Delivered in rolls, sod will need to be oriented and then rolled out across the entire surface area of your lawn. Start at one end and unroll each roll beside the last piece placed until all dirt is covered.
  • Trim the sod – To ensure that the sod remains neat and tidy you’re going to want to trim the edges of each piece applied.
  • Level the sod – Use a sod roller to level the freshly placed sod, ensuring that it’s even throughout.
  • Nourish the sod – Once successfully placed, you’re going to want to nourish the sod with water and refrain from walking on it for at least one week until it’s had the opportunity to bond with the soil beneath and begin healthy growth.

The best time to lay sod will depend on the type of sod you’re laying, but in most cases, the best time of year to apply it is during the fall months. The cooler, dry air will allow the grass to bond with the dirt below, and a fall application will give you the best chance of having a beautiful green lawn come spring.

During the first week following grass application, you’re going to want to water your sod heavily – anywhere from 5-10 minutes 2-3 times per day. In week two you can reduce the watering amount to 4 times per week, and slowly wean off each week following as by this point the grass should be well bonded with the soil below.

There are many ways to get rid of weeds in your lawn, but the most common approaches are as follows:

  • Active Weed Removal – This involves the process of actively assessing your lawn each day or week and individually removing each weed (alongside its roots) with the help of a standing or kneeling weed-removal toolkit.
  • Proactive Weed Removal – This involves the process of applying weed-killer (or some other form of herbicide) to prevent weeds from growing on your lawn in the first place.
